Scott Robert Gerlicher, a longtime Minneapolis Police Department commander and respected public safety leader, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday morning, June 6, 2026. He was 58 years old.

His passing has left family members, friends, former colleagues, and community leaders mourning the loss of a man whose life was defined by service, leadership, and dedication to public safety.

Born on November 13, 1967, in Minneapolis, Gerlicher grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he developed strong ties to the community he would continue to serve throughout his life. He graduated from Minnetonka High School before earning advanced degrees, including a master’s in Public Administration, and completing training at the FBI National Academy.

He served with the Minneapolis Police Department from 1989 until his retirement in 2021, spending more than three decades in law enforcement. Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks from patrol officer to deputy chief and earned widespread respect for his leadership and professionalism.

He became widely recognized for his leadership in organizing public safety operations for major citywide events.

After retiring from active law enforcement, he continued his public service as Security and Emergency Management Coordinator for Minnetonka Public Schools, where he remained committed to protecting students and supporting community safety initiatives.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gerlicher was remembered for his adventurous spirit and vibrant personality. He was an avid skier, longtime instructor with Ski Jammers, and a frequent presence on Lake Minnetonka, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

He was also known for his humor, creativity, and ability to bring people together, often organizing social gatherings and community activities that reflected his outgoing personality.

Scott Gerlicher is survived by his wife, Cari; daughters Hannah, Emma, and Molly; his father, Dr. Robert Gerlicher; his sister Susan; extended family members; and close friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Gerlicher.
